Dreaming about winter sport vacations in Wisconsin? It’s time to turn those dreams into reality. Edenwood Ranch and Preserve in Wautoma is a top vacation destination for winter sport enthusiasts of all types. Today we’re going to share some specifics about one of our favorites: cross-country skiing. Read on to learn all about the basics of cross-country skiing at Edenwood.

Benefits of Cross-Country Skiing

While most people know that cross-country skiing is a good physical activity, not many know the specific benefits. This is one of the top sports for whole body impact. It can be done by a wide variety of ages and abilities. Cross-country skiing is also unique because it allows its participants to reap the benefits of spending wintertime in nature. Additional benefits include:

  • It’s low impact, which means it’s a great option for folks with back or joint problems
  • Improves balance
  • Excellent for cardiac health
  • Full-body workout
  • Increased agility

Supplies & Preparation

As with any great sport, it’s important to make sure you have the correct equipment to prepare for your adventure. With cross-country skiing, the list of equipment and preparation is pretty short. To prepare, be sure to dress appropriately for the weather. Typically, that will be warm layered clothing, ideally with fabrics that wick away moisture. You will also want to be sure to hydrate and stretch before beginning.

The equipment needed are as follows:

  • Cross-country boots
  • Ski poles
  • Cross-country skis

When you stay with us at Edenwood, just bring your cross-country skis from home or rent a pair at a local sports outfitter!

Tips & Tricks for Beginners

If you are a cross-country beginner, we are so excited that you’re considering giving this sport a try. As you can probably tell, we think this sport is one of the best. But, at Edenwood, we encourage you to give all our winter sports a try this holiday season (more on that in a bit).

  • Falling may be difficult but getting back up is the real challenge
  • Be patient with yourself
  • Take a friend or two along who has done cross-country skiing before
  • Stay on a designated trail
